Can any single photo accurately capture all aspects of a given scene? How can news outlets be more transparent about the effects of "perspective distortion" in the photos they publish?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Although a photograph can appear to be one of the most accurate ways to show a specific scene, photography can definitely be misleading. Not only because of the possibility of a blunt modification through editing tools, but from the start, there´s always a decision to be made by the photographer on where to position the camera, and different positions can alter the meaning of an image.

Explanation:

Furthermore, different camera angles and different lenses can affect the appearance and meaning of the scene. This perspective distortion may not be intentional, but news outlets could avoid it by making a conscious decision on what idea they want to portrait in a given scene and provide precise instruction and the required equipment so the photographer can deliver the best possible representation.

Soda pop has a happy-go-lucky personality. He is very fond of the ladies due to being charming and handsome. Although Soda Pop seems cool all the time he has an interchangeable personality that is a combination of happy and sensitivity. Soda Pop cares for his brothers and friends greatly. His brother Pony Boy deeply admired his cool laid back traits. Soda Pop in general is a loving, happy character with an emotional side.
Soda pop is seventeen, the middle of the three Curtis brothers. He is energetic, disinterested in school, and movie-star handsome. He reminds Darry and Ponyboy that they “ought to be able to stick together against everything” since they’re all they have left family wise. He takes his role as middle brother seriously, and is constantly the in-between for Pony and Darry, acting as a buffer against their constant clashes.

LITERARY ANALYSIS: Although Papi says, “Everything will be fine” regarding the secret police (SIM), Alvarez describes a feeling of omnipresent terror in the Torres household. Identify and analyze how the setting shows that Papi and the others are afraid and/or have something to fear. Be sure to use textual evidence to support your analysis.

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

In Julia Alvarez's novel, "In the Time of the Butterflies," the setting plays a significant role in conveying the omnipresent terror that the Torres family experiences due to the presence of the secret police (SIM) in the Dominican Republic. Despite Papi's reassurance that "Everything will be fine," the setting consistently depicts an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.

The Torres family's physical setting is described as being constantly surveilled by the SIM. Alvarez writes, "Papi keeps saying the SIM has the place under surveillance. It's not safe to talk, even in our own home" (chapter 1). This shows that the Torres household is not a place of refuge, but rather a place of danger where even speaking freely is not allowed. The presence of the SIM is always felt, and the fear of being overheard or caught is a constant source of tension.

Moreover, the description of the natural setting reinforces the sense of fear and dread. The novel takes place during the rainy season, and the stormy weather is used to reflect the characters' internal states. For example, when Dede hears the sound of the SIM helicopters flying overhead, "the thunder echoed, magnifying her fear" (chapter 4). The thunder is a metaphor for the ominous presence of the SIM, and the way it "magnifies" Dede's fear shows how the setting contributes to her sense of vulnerability.

In conclusion, Alvarez's use of setting in "In the Time of the Butterflies" effectively conveys the omnipresent terror that the Torres family experiences due to the presence of the SIM. The constant surveillance of the physical setting and the stormy weather serve as powerful metaphors for the characters' internal states, highlighting their fear and vulnerability. Despite Papi's reassurance, the setting reveals that the family has plenty to fear.

Which two lines in this excerpt from Ernest Lawrence Thayer’s "Casey at the Bat" support the theme that the desire to win at all costs makes people act desperately?
Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt;
Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt;
Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip,
Defiance flashed in Casey’s eye, a sneer curled Casey’s lip.

And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
And Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped—
“That ain’t my style," said Casey. “Strike one!” the umpire said.

From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore;
“Kill him! Kill the umpire!” shouted someone on the stand;
And it’s likely they’d have killed him had not Casey raised his hand.

With a smile of Christian charity great Casey’s visage shone;
He stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on;
He signaled to the pitcher, and once more the dun sphere flew;
But Casey still ignored it and the umpire said, “Strike two!”

No wind is favorable if one does not know to which port one is sailing.
—Chinese proverb

Describe what this Chinese proverb says about setting and achieving goals. Then briefly explain how you feel about its message.

Answers

Answer:

the meaning of this means one can never progress in life without working hard.

Explanation:

according to me if a person works hard he will surely succeed

Answer:

In this proverb, the port stands for our goals and the wind represents our actions. The proverb is trying to teach us that our actions will be worthless if we don’t know where we wish to go in the future. Even the greatest actions will be somewhat useless if we aren’t working toward an end goal.

I think this message is a little tricky because in life it’s hard to know where you are headed. Life is not like a sailing trip, which usually starts with a clear destination. On the other hand, it’s good to remember that we should look for “favorable winds.” That means I should choose the circumstances of my life—to the extent that I can—that will most likely lead to what I consider success.

We’re Going to Mars!

Human exploration of Mars is no longer the stuff of science fiction. The United States could very likely send its first delegation to the red planet in 2033. If SpaceX, a private company dedicated to space travel and exploration, has any say in it, humans will reach Mars as early as 2022. As amazing as this seems, studying Mars is expensive, difficult, and dangerous. The most important three questions are as follows: Why should we do it? How are we going to get there? How much will it cost?

Studying the evolution of other planets furthers our knowledge of our universe as well as our planet.

Today, Mars is too cold and the atmosphere is too thin for life to exist on the surface. However, evidence suggests that life may have existed in bacterial form billions of years ago. The planet must have been warm enough at one point to support life. Discovering what caused the change could help scientists better understand Earth’s climate. Also, studying sediments, rocks, and soils, as well as volcanoes and meteoroid impact sites, can help scientists study details of Earth’s evolution.

Exploring Mars could lead to colonization.

Settling other planets is the most attractive aspect of space exploration. It brings to mind entire galaxies filled with human outposts, discovering amazing landscapes and species, and possibly finding intelligent life similar to our own. Studying Mars is one of the first steps along the way. The benefits go well beyond the “wow” factor. Colonies would be able to reap raw materials—including electricity—on their planets and send them back to Earth. That’s right! Colonists could harvest the sun’s energy and send it to Earth in the form of electricity. Being able to farm renewable power will release humans from being too reliant on gas, coal, and nuclear energy.

Colonizing Mars goes beyond the practical rewards. It would be an important moment in the history of humanity, ranking up there with the discovery of “The New World” and the moon landing. It would require a lot of resources, money, and collaboration. Multiple countries could learn how to better our species. Some of the products we use every day were invented by NASA, including baby formula, water filtration, and cell phone cameras. The amount of technological innovation required for such an effort could benefit the world as well.

How will we do it?

NASA currently has plans to send a human mission to Mars by 2033. There are five phases, or steps.

Phase 0: has been going on since the main building of the International Space Station began in 1998. The experiments and collaboration with private space companies (such as SpaceX) are a major component of this phase.

Phase 1: requires that we build bigger and better spacecraft. This will transport the crew with all of the supplies it needs to survive.

Phase 2: Build a Deep Space Transport (DST) system. The DST system calls for creating vehicles that astronauts can live in during the two-year trip to Mars, as well as supply lines. This is a practice step of sorts. The system will be tested using missions to the moon.

Phase 3: Expand the DST system to Mars

Phase 4: Take a manned trip to the red planet.

If this sounds expensive, that’s because it is. Mars One, a private space exploration company whose mission is to establish a permanent human colony on Mars, estimates that it will cost $6 billion. SpaceX estimates that it will cost $10 billion per person. NASA’s costs are much higher. It thinks that such a mission would ultimately cost $1 trillion. Currently, NASA receives 0.5% of the national budget, or $22.629 billion, for all of its operations.

But don’t worry! Although the cost seems extremely high, Elon Musk, who owns SpaceX, thinks that the cost of moving to the moon will eventually be much less. Once everything is in place, the colonies are established, and deep space travel is normalized, someone could move to Mars for as little as $100,000.

“It gets to the point where almost anyone, if they saved up and this was their goal, could buy a ticket and move to Mars — and given that Mars would have a labor shortage for a long time, jobs would not be in short supply,” he said.

Lesson 15: Compare and Contrast with the Biography "We Were There, Too!"

The Target Skill in this lesson is Compare and Contrast

Concept Question: Are the details in my Venn Diagram important for the story or the characters in it, or are they just trivia (true, but not important to the story or characters)?

Lesson 15 Grab-And-Go Resources

From Journeys:

Compare and Contrast The selection "We Were There, Too!" allows readers to compare and contrast the experiences of two young people involved in the American Revolution.  As you read, look for text evidence that helps you think about how the situations, motives, and traits of the two subjects are alike and different.  Use a graphic organizer like this one to record similarities and differences between the two patriots.

When you compare and contrast the actions of two or more historical figures, you learn more about each one's character.  The things they do and the choices they make show who they are inside.

In "We Were There, Too!" Joseph Plumb Martin and Sybil Ludington are similar in that they act on behalf of their country.  Their behaviors are alike in other ways, too, but they also have some important differences.

Recording text evidence in a Venn diagram like the one above will help you keep track of similarities and differences between Joseph Plumb Martin and Sybil Ludington.

When you compare and contrast two people, look for text evidence that shows how the two characters are different about the same topic.  For example, if the text says that Jack likes chocolate ice-cream and that Jill likes strawberry ice-cream, that would be a good piece of text evidence to use in your Venn diagram because it tells us that Jack and Jill like different kinds of ice cream.  In this example, we can compare how they are different about the topic of favorite ice cream.

However, if the text says that Jack like dogs, but does not say anything about what animals Jill likes, you cannot say that Jack likes dogs and Jill doesn't.  Unless the text says that Jill does not like dogs, you cannot assume that just because the text says Jack likes dogs and doesn't say anything about Jill, that Jill must not like dogs.  When you compare and contrast, the things that are different MUST be differences about the same topic.

Ted is analyzing the sonnet “Composed upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802.” As you read the sonnet, notice what the author says about urban and rural settings.

Earth has not anything to show more fair:

Dull would he be of soul who could pass by

A sight so touching in its majesty:

This City now doth, like a garment, wear

The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,

Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie

Open unto the fields, and to the sky;

All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.

Never did sun more beautifully steep

In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;

Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!

The river glideth at his own sweet will:

Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;

And all that mighty heart is lying still!

How does the poem’s form contribute to its meaning?

A. The rhyme scheme emphasizes the beauty and natural elements of the city.

B. The octave creates an image of the city, while the sestet gives the speaker’s awed reaction.

C. The octave introduces the speaker’s opinions about cities, while the sestet contradicts those opinions.

D. The meter, iambic pentameter, mimics the sounds of natural elements while the lines describe an urban scene.

Answers

Answer: B. The octave creates an image of the city, while the sestet gives the speaker’s awed reaction.

Explanation:

The first eight lines of this poem describe the way the city of London looks from the bridge. It gives great imagery and detail. Then, the final six lines represent the speaker's awe at this sight. This structure allows the reader to understand what the speaker is looking at and then follow him through his admiration for what he sees.
