Answer 1

The slopes of the lines are listed below:

Case 1: m = - 1

Case 2: m = 1 / 2

Case 3: m = 3

Case 4: m = 2

How to determine the slope of a line

In this question we find five cases of line equations, whose slopes must be determined. This can be done by two approaches. First, using the secant line formula:

m = Δy / Δx

Where m is the slope.

Second, writing the equation of the line in its explicit form:

y = m · x + b

Where:

m - Slopeb - Interceptx - Independent variable.y - Dependent variable.

Now we proceed to determine the slope of each line:

Case 1

m = (6 - 8) / [- 2 - (- 4)]

m = - 2 / 2

m = - 1

Case 2

y = (1 / 2) · x + 8

m = 1 / 2

Case 3

m = [5 - (- 7)] / [2 - (- 2)]

m = 12 / 4

m = 3

Case 4

2 · y = 4 · x + 12

y = 2 · x + 6

m = 2

An industrial psychologist consulting with Lara music stores knows that the average number of complaints management receives each month throughout the industry is 6, but the standard deviation is unknown. Twenty of the Lara music stores were randomly selected to record complaints for one month; the mean of this sample was 3 and its standard deviation was 1.5. Using the .05 significance level, is the number of complaints received by Lara music stores different from the number of complaints received by music stores in general

Answers

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

H0 : μ ≥ 6

H1 : μ < 6

Test statistic :

n = 20

Sample Mean, x = 3

σ = 1.5

Test statistic = (x - μ) ÷ σ/sqrt(n)

Test statistic = (3 - 6) ÷ 1.5/sqrt(20)

Test statistic = - 3 / 0.3354101

Test statistic = −8.944271

Since, sample size is < 30 ;

Obtaining the Critical value using the from T;

Tcritical at 0.05, df = 19 = - 1.729

Tstatistic < Tcritical

−8.944271 < - 1.729

Hence, we reject the Null:

We can conclude that there is significant evidence that the number of complaints received by Lara music store is different from number of complaints received by music stores in general.

Testing to see if a well-known company is lying in its advertising. If there is evidence that the company is lying, the Federal Trade Commission will file a lawsuit against them. Relatively large significance level Relatively small significance level

Answers

It makes more sense to use a relatively small significance level (such as α=0.01) in this situation. The reason is, the consequences of falsely accusing a well-known company of lying in their advertising could be significant, and filing a lawsuit is a serious action.

Therefore, it is important to have a high level of confidence in the evidence before taking such a step. A small significance level would ensure that the evidence gathered is statistically significant, reducing the likelihood of making a false accusation. On the other hand, a relatively large significance level (such as α=0.10) would increase the chances of a Type I error, which is the incorrect rejection of a true null hypothesis, potentially leading to false accusations and legal repercussions.

6) Lily was going to have a party so she
bought some sweets.She bought some
cookies and brownies. Cookies were $2 and
brownies were $3. She spent $144 for a total
of 60 sweets. How many cookies and
brownies did she buy?

Answers

Let's assume the number of cookies Lily bought is represented by "C," and the number of brownies is represented by "B."

According to the problem, the cost of one cookie is $2, and the cost of one brownie is $3. Lily spent a total of $144.

We can set up two equations based on the given information:

C + B = 60 (equation 1, representing the total number of sweets)

2C + 3B = 144 (equation 2, representing the total cost in dollars)

To solve this system of equations, we can use substitution or elimination method. Here, we'll use the substitution method.

From equation 1, we can rewrite it as C = 60 - B.

Now substitute this value of C in equation 2:

2(60 - B) + 3B = 144

Simplify the equation:

120 - 2B + 3B = 144

Combine like terms:

120 + B = 144

Subtract 120 from both sides:

B = 144 - 120

B = 24

Now substitute the value of B back into equation 1 to find C:

C + 24 = 60

C = 60 - 24

C = 36

Therefore, Lily bought 36 cookies and 24 brownies.

The dot plot shows the prices (in dollars) of jeans. What are the most appropriate measures to describe

Answers

To describe the center of the data, we can use either the mean or the median.

To describe the variation of the data, we can use either the range or the interquartile range (IQR).

Looking at the dot plot, it seems that the data is somewhat skewed to the right, with a few high-priced outliers. In this case, the median and the IQR may be more appropriate measures of the center and variation, respectively, as they are less sensitive to outliers.

To find the median and IQR:

Arrange the data in order from smallest to largest.

Find the median, which is the middle value. If there are an even number of values, take the average of the two middle values.

Find the first quartile, which is the median of the lower half of the data.

Find the third quartile, which is the median of the upper half of the data.

Calculate the IQR as the difference between the third quartile and the first quartile.

Here are the steps applied to the dot plot:

We can see that the smallest value is about 20 and the largest value is about 120, giving a range of 100 dollars.

The median is approximately 60 dollars, as it is the middle value between the 11th and 12th data points when the data is arranged in order.

The first quartile is approximately 40 dollars, as it isthe median of the lower half of the data points, which are found below the median.

The third quartile is approximately 80 dollars, as it is the median of the upper half of the data points, which are found above the median.

The IQR can be calculated as the difference between the third quartile and the first quartile, which is approximately 40 dollars.

Therefore, the most appropriate measures to describe the center and the variation for this data set are the median and the interquartile range (IQR), respectively. The median is approximately 60 dollars, and the IQR is approximately 40 dollars.

Wells [1898] But who shall dwell in these worlds if they be inhabited?Are we or they Lords of the World?And how are all things made for man? KEPLER (quoted in The Anatomy of Melancholy)BOOK ONE: THE COMING OF THE MARTIANSCHAPTER ONE: THE EVE OF THE WAR, excerptNo one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment.Yet so vain is man, and so blinded by his vanity, that no writer, up to the very end of the nineteenth century, expressed any idea that intelligent life might have developed there far, or indeed at all, beyond its earthly level. Nor was it generally understood that since Mars is older than our earth, with scarcely a quarter of the superficial area and remoter from the sun, it necessarily follows that it is not only more distant from time's beginning but nearer its end.The secular cooling that must someday overtake our planet has already gone far indeed with our neighbour. Its physical condition is still largely a mystery, but we know now that even in its equatorial region the midday temperature barely approaches that of our coldest winter. Its air is much more attenuated than ours, its oceans have shrunk until they cover but a third of its surface, and as its slow seasons change huge snowcaps gather and melt about either pole and periodically inundate its temperate zones. That last stage of exhaustion, which to us is still incredibly remote, has become a present-day problem for the inhabitants of Mars. The immediate pressure of necessity has brightened their intellects, enlarged their powers, and hardened their hearts. And looking across space with instruments, and intelligences such as we have scarcely dreamed of, they see, at its nearest distance only 35,000,000 of miles sunward of them, a morning star of hope, our own warmer planet, green with vegetation and grey with water, with a cloudy atmosphere eloquent of fertility, with glimpses through its drifting cloud wisps of broad stretches of populous country and narrow, navy-crowded seas.And we men, the creatures who inhabit this earth, must be to them at least as alien and lowly as are the monkeys and lemurs to us. The intellectual side of man already admits that life is an incessant struggle for existence, and it would seem that this too is the belief of the minds upon Mars. Their world is far gone in its cooling and this world is still crowded with life, but crowded only with what they regard as inferior animals. To carry warfare sunward is, indeed, their only escape from the destruction that, generation after generation, creeps upon them.Read this line from The War of the Worlds:It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed daysWhat does this line from the text suggest about people?
