THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

What can you conclude about American society and values from the literature available to teenagers before YA?

Answers

Before Young Adult (YA) literature came into existence, the material that was available to teenagers mirrored conservative and traditional American society and ideals. The books stressed coming-of-age tales with a strong emphasis on moral lessons and family, community, and familial values, and frequently punished characters who went against social conventions. Along with the significance of education and intellectual pursuits, the main cultural values of hard work, self-discipline, and personal responsibility were also strongly emphasized. But since these books mainly featured white, middle-class characters and infrequently discussed topics pertaining to race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation, it reflects a less inclusive and accepting society. In general, the literature that was available to teenagers before YA was didactic and sought to teach in young readers traditional ideals and social conventions.
Answer:Prior to the creation of Young Adult literature, the literature that was available to teens reflected conventional and conservative American culture and ideas. The novels emphasized coming-of-age stories with a focus on moral teachings and family, community, and familial values. Characters who disobeyed societal norms were regularly punished in the works. The importance of education and intellectual pursuits was extensively emphasized, and the major cultural values of hard work, self-discipline, and personal responsibility were as well. But because the majority of the protagonists in these works were white middle-class people, and because issues of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation were rarely covered, it speaks to a society that is less welcoming and inclusive. Before YA, teen fiction was often didactic and aimed to instill conventional values in its young readers.

The conflict in the passage is Colin has never seen the garden, since he has never been outside because he's always in his bed because of his sickness.

Mary is smart, and helpful, a girl who loves nature and loves to be social. She enjoys her time with Dickon and Colin.

Direct and indirect characterization help develop the conflict by showing how amazing Colins sights are when he goes outside. It shows it directly by stating, 'Colin had actually dropped back against his cushions, even though he gasped with delight'. Whereas an example of it being showed indirectly is where the author stated, 'He looked so strange and different because a pink glow of color had actually crept all over him- ivory face and neck and hands and all.'

It's important to include the name of the website, the date you accessed the website, and the complete website address/URL in the citation. Additionally, the name of the website should be formatted with italics or underlined to indicate that it's a title.

Explanation:

Answer:

The correct way to cite an article you read online about Magnetism is:

Author, A. A. (Date of publication). Title of article. Title of website, [URL].

For example, if you read an article about Magnetism on the website "Magnetism Today" on August 5, 2005, you would cite it as follows:

possible
B. Showing multiple characters' perspectives on the same event or

C. Avoiding common pitfalls in story writing, such as telling rather

D. Creating suspense by limiting the reader's perspective on the

Answers

Answer is D ! “Creating suspense by limiting the readers perspective on the story’s events”

C. Avoiding common pitfalls in story writing, such as telling rather than showing is an advantage of telling a story from the first-person point of view.

Advantages of telling a storyA first-person narrator provides the reader a front-row seat to the story. It also: Provides story credibility. The first-person point of view builds a rapport with readers by transferring a personal story directly to them.Telling stories opens the eyes of youthful kids to new things – places, culture, traditions. It creates them to imagine being in the place of the story's characters which expands their empathy as they try to understand their actions. The biggest benefit of the first-person point of view exists in how deeply it delves into the mind of the narrator. No other point of view stands as close. In first-person, the reader gets to see all of the narrator's thoughts, feelings, and knowledge. The first-person point of view permits you, as the reader/audience, to be able to see into that specific character's mind, giving you insight into their thoughts and emotions.

Hence, The answer is not "B," because a point of view that permits the reader/audience to see multiple viewpoints on an identical event/situation is not a first-person point of contention. It is a third-person view.

Wild animals as viewed from a mountain camp—Camille Grant, October 2011

Through my binoculars, I viewed a group of wild animals in action. A pride of lions was sleeping when a small, yellow bus pulled up beside them. Tourists on a safari were packed into the bus like sardines in a can. Armed with cameras, they invaded the lions' territory, hoping to capture the perfect photograph. The crowd leaned out the windows, hooting and hollering, until the lions awoke. When the lions moved away, the bus rolled after them, relentlessly stalking the pride. One of the lions turned and roared to protect the young. This was greeted with cheers and a celebratory honk of the bus horn. The curious visitors observed the lions' routine for an hour before moving on. Leaving a cloud of dust, the bus headed away, taking the wild animals off to disturb someone else's home.
