Read the excerpt from The Odyssey.

Now Zeus the lord of cloud roused in the north
a storm against the ships, and driving veils
of squall moved down like night on land and sea.
The bows went plunging at the gust; sails
cracked and lashed out strips in the big wind.
We saw death in that fury, dropped the yards,
unshipped the oars, and pulled for the nearest lee:
then two long days and nights we lay offshore
worn out and sick at heart, tasting our grief,
until a third Dawn came with ringlets shining.

SUMMARY
The article discusses the way in which scientist are beginning to reexamine the link between gene mutations and inheritable disease. The article cites a study that found that humans have an average of over 50 gene mutations, but most are not harmful. The article discusses a specific genetic variant that was linked to kidney failure until a doctor, who had a patient with this mutation and kidney issues, discovered that he had previously come across several people in a study that had the same genetic variance but did not present with kidney issues. This has caused researchers to question their previous methods for linking genetic variations and diseases and caused many to call for more research and the development of new methods of identifying and linking these variations in human genome and resulting medical issues.
REFLECTION
This article is interesting and a little scary. When we go to the doctor, we all just assume that the science is infallible, and the doctors know what they are doing. Stories like this remind us just how much we have yet to understand about the human body. With 20,000-25,000 genes, its surprising that scientist could even sequence DNA, let alone find specific variants. Collecting more information on the human genome will give scientist valuable insight into hereditary diseases but concluding inaccurate findings could prove disastrous. It would be interesting if this research could tell us the exact roll that different environmental conditions play in human development and the prevalence of different issues as well. By understanding and controlling for genetic variants, the long-term effects that environment has on humans’ health and behavior should become clearer. The most terrifying idea that I can’t help but think about is that of CRISPR. As we go though this chapter and especially reading this article, I can’t help but think how close it feels to becoming a reality. Hopefully if scientists are able to locate specific abnormalities and link them to diseases or disorders, they will be able to effectively use gene editing to dramatically raise the rate of healthy births.

Answers

The summary provides a clear and concise overview of the article, highlighting the key points about the reexamination of the link between gene mutations and inheritable diseases. The author also provides a thoughtful reflection on the implications of the research, considering both the potential benefits and risks of genetic research and gene-editing technologies. The reflection raises important questions about the limitations of current scientific understanding and the potential for future advances in genetics research to improve human health. Overall, the summary and reflection provide a balanced and insightful analysis of the article.

The War of the Worlds
by H. G. Wells [1898]
But who shall dwell in these worlds if they be
inhabited?…Are we or they Lords of the
World?…And how are all things made for man?—
KEPLER (quoted in The Anatomy of Melancholy)

BOOK ONE: THE COMING OF THE MARTIANS
CHAPTER ONE: THE EVE OF THE WAR, excerpt

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment.

Yet so vain is man, and so blinded by his vanity, that no writer, up to the very end of the nineteenth century, expressed any idea that intelligent life might have developed there far, or indeed at all, beyond its earthly level. Nor was it generally understood that since Mars is older than our earth, with scarcely a quarter of the superficial area and remoter from the sun, it necessarily follows that it is not only more distant from time's beginning but nearer its end.

The secular cooling that must someday overtake our planet has already gone far indeed with our neighbour. Its physical condition is still largely a mystery, but we know now that even in its equatorial region the midday temperature barely approaches that of our coldest winter. Its air is much more attenuated than ours, its oceans have shrunk until they cover but a third of its surface, and as its slow seasons change huge snowcaps gather and melt about either pole and periodically inundate its temperate zones. That last stage of exhaustion, which to us is still incredibly remote, has become a present-day problem for the inhabitants of Mars. The immediate pressure of necessity has brightened their intellects, enlarged their powers, and hardened their hearts. And looking across space with instruments, and intelligences such as we have scarcely dreamed of, they see, at its nearest distance only 35,000,000 of miles sunward of them, a morning star of hope, our own warmer planet, green with vegetation and grey with water, with a cloudy atmosphere eloquent of fertility, with glimpses through its drifting cloud wisps of broad stretches of populous country and narrow, navy-crowded seas.

And we men, the creatures who inhabit this earth, must be to them at least as alien and lowly as are the monkeys and lemurs to us. The intellectual side of man already admits that life is an incessant struggle for existence, and it would seem that this too is the belief of the minds upon Mars. Their world is far gone in its cooling and this world is still crowded with life, but crowded only with what they regard as inferior animals. To carry warfare sunward is, indeed, their only escape from the destruction that, generation after generation, creeps upon them.

Why was it wrong for polonius to use ophelia to spy on hamlet

Answers

Polonius' decision reveals Polonius' manipulative nature and disregard for his daughter's well-being, ultimately leading to tragic consequences.

Firstly, Polonius' decision to use Ophelia as a pawn in his plan demonstrates a lack of respect for her autonomy and agency. By assigning her the role of a spy, he treats her as a tool to serve his own interests rather than acknowledging her as an individual with her own thoughts and feelings. This paternalistic behavior reflects a patriarchal mindset that views women as objects to be controlled and manipulated.

Furthermore, Polonius' actions disregard Ophelia's emotional well-being. Ophelia is deeply in love with Hamlet, and her involvement in spying on him places her in a position of conflict and emotional distress. Polonius shows little concern for the potential negative impact this may have on Ophelia's mental and emotional state. By exploiting her feelings for Hamlet, he disregards her happiness and exposes her to unnecessary psychological turmoil.

Polonius' decision also raises ethical concerns regarding privacy and trust. Hamlet and Ophelia's relationship should have been based on trust and honesty. However, Polonius' interference breaches this trust, undermining the foundation of their connection. The act of spying violates Hamlet's personal boundaries and invades his privacy, damaging any chance of genuine communication and understanding between the two characters.

Moreover, Polonius' plan ultimately contributes to Ophelia's deterioration and tragic fate. As Ophelia becomes entangled in the deceit and manipulation orchestrated by her father, she loses her sense of self and descends into madness. Polonius' actions can be seen as a catalyst for Ophelia's mental and emotional unraveling, leading to her eventual tragic demise.

In conclusion, Polonius' decision to use Ophelia as a means to spy on Hamlet in "Hamlet" was morally wrong and ethically questionable. His manipulation and disregard for Ophelia's well-being highlight his lack of respect for her autonomy and emotional state. The breach of trust, invasion of privacy, and negative consequences that result from his actions ultimately contribute to the tragic events that unfold in the play. Polonius' behavior serves as a cautionary example of the harmful effects of using and manipulating others for personal gain.

Answer:

I believe the narrator tries to force the quiet girl to speak because he wants to know things she is the only one that knows them. And to stop the abuse she goes through.

The reasons behind the protagonist forcing her are that she doesn't understand why she just doesn't talk to stop the bullying because she puts herself in the quiet girls' shoes but can't understand why she doesn't speak. So she forces her.

The reason behind this answer is that in the first place, the narrator tries to make speak because there is a mystery behind her wish of not speaking and because she is getting bullied by it. So the main character forces her to speak. Answers

Oscar Wilde used the character of Algernon to make a comment on the people and society by taking Algernon's insatiable appetite to extremes. In the play, Algernon consumes food obsessively and disregards other crucial things that need to be addressed in life. He eats cucumber sandwiches and muffins, even during significant events, causing people to question his priorities.

Through Algernon's behavior, Wilde indicates that people often get engrossed in meaningless things and ignore what's truly essential in life. Algernon's behavior portrays the tendency of people to live in the moment and forget to focus on more crucial things in life. Furthermore, Algernon's obsession with food signifies a larger societal problem, which is the tendency of individuals to overindulge in material pleasures.

Wilde suggests that people should focus on more critical aspects of life than indulging in luxuries. The character of Algernon is presented as a reflection of society's decadent aristocracy that are obsessed with social rank and material pleasures and neglect the essential things in life. Algernon's obsession with food is a metaphor for the aristocracy's superficial and trivial way of life.

Wilde's portrayal of the aristocracy is a criticism of their self-absorption and moral decay. Wilde's criticism of the aristocracy in the play is a reflection of his views on Victorian society's obsession with materialism and wealth. Thus, Algernon's obsession with food is an indication of the problems associated with the excessive focus on material pleasures and the disregard for other crucial things that need to be addressed in life.
